Archive for August, 2010

The list is a little late this week due to my father visiting for several days. He was here for business but we squeezed in a lot of touristy things he hasn’t had a chance to see on previous visits. We went to an Astros game (against the Mets–we won!), took the Sam Houston Boat Tour that the Port of Houston Authority offers free of charge (highly recommended), and toured NASA and Space Center Houston. My family lives far away from here, so I’m always grateful and happy when I get to visit with any of them and show off the things we love about this area.

We finished the weekend with a trip to the mall (exhausting) and a great fish taco dinner with friends (refreshing). All in all a great week.

This week so far has been filled with meetings, including a very long City Council meeting, and a forecast for more of the same. I’ll be ready for my mini-break in California this weekend–I’ll tell you all about it in List 9.

In the meantime, enjoy this week’s belated list, and have a great week!

  2. being a tour guide

OK, so my week last week was ridiculously long, but not quite as horrific as I had expected. The weekend was fabulous (except for the heat), so I think all-in-all we’re off to a good start for this week.

My Dad is coming to visit this week, which means that I get to be tourist (one of my favorite things) while I show him all the fun things he’s missed every time he’s been here before. We’re going to go see the Astros (who hopefully will beat the Mets every single night), I’m going to take him to NASA, and we’re going on the Sam Houston Boat Tour at the Houston Port Authority. So that should be fun.

I’ll give you updates next week, and if you have any suggestions let me know. In the meantime, have a great week and enjoy the lists!

top 20

  1. My Aunt JoAn, who ran the Seattle Danskin Triathlon yesterday.

She’s 67 and was racing against women half her age or less–I’m so proud of her. She and my uncle Don sailed around the world and then built their own house. She also knits and makes quilts.

  2. blue herons
  3. Green chile. It doesn’t grow in the Houston area, and I miss it. Luckily, they have it at HEB and Central Market (see top 20, item 12), so all is not lost.
  4. a clean car
  5. My Gulf Coast Challenge Disc Golf Team. I am about the worst disc golf player in the world, but Isaac and Jamey keep me around anyway.
  6. Fareed Zakaria
  7. the Holiday Inn Express in La Porte
  8. Play-Doh
  9. Seabrook Classic Cafe on Nasa Rd. 1. Always delicious.
  10. Making the final payment on our November cruise to Jamaica.

  14. Jamey’s imitation of the mascot for our neighboring city and arch rivals, the Deer Park Deer
  15. champagne tomatoes

  17. Pixar
  18. The word “rax” which got me 40 points in Words with Friends. I’ll admit I didn’t know it was a word until I played it.
  19. Icy-Hot
  20. finally hearing the phrase, “We are adjourned.”

bottom 10

  1. Sweltering summer heat and humidity. I prefer it to the scorching summer temperatures of the desert where we used to live, but it’s still pretty horrendous.
  2. my clumsy tendencies
  3. rude people
  4. intolerance
  5. People who leave their carts in the parking lot. Seriously–it’s just a short walk to the little cart corral. It won’t kill you.

  7. daiquiri spills (my own)
  8. dirty contacts
  9. Playing disc golf in the sweltering heat (see top 20, item 4 and bottom 10, item 1). Not only am I the worst player in the world, I’m also way out of shape. And it was hot. Really, really hot.

I had such a lovely weekend! This is good because I’m pretty sure this is going to be a rough week.

Jamey’s daughter and father came in from San Antonio to celebrate his 48th birthday, and we had a SPLENDID dinner on Saturday with good friends, good company, and ridiculously delicious food. Dessert (and birthday cake) came in the form of The Best Chocoloate Bundt Cake Ever (see top 20, item 1). Having company also forced me to clean, which is always a good thing (see top 20, item 2).

I have what I think are some unfair challenges to meet at work this week, and I’m eternally grateful that I have a wonderful, supportive husband, a great family, good friends, and a really great life in general. So no matter what happens, I know that everything will ultimately be just fine. And that’s good to know.

Enjoy the list and have a fantastic week!

top 20

  1. The Best Chocolate Bundt Cake Ever. It totally lived up to its name. This is a picture from the original blog by Joy the Baker. I wish I had taken a picture of my own cake, but it’s all gone now so it’s too late.

  4. a lazy Sunday afternoon with a good book

I’m a little tardy this week. I’ve been very busy: I had a dinner on Friday, Ottmar Liebert at the House of Blues on Saturday, the beach on Sunday and the Bachelorette finale on Monday. So you’ll just have to forgive me as you read the list a little later than usual.

You should know that August is birthday month in the Ford family (Ford is my maiden name). We make a huge deal out of birthdays (something that our spouses inform us that everyone evidently doesn’t do); thus the top three of the top 20 devoted to birthday shout-outs. I can do that. It’s my blog.

Oh, also–in the interest of time I’m going to forego the usual photo montage between the lists. It’ll be back next week unless enough of you tell me that you really prefer it this way.

Have a fabulous week, and enjoy!

top 20

  1. My husband Jamey, who turns 48 this Saturday. He’s the best part of my pretty great life.
  2. My sister Jackie, who turns 24 on Sunday. She is one of my favorite people, and I’m not just saying that because she’s my youngest sister.
  3. My brother-in-law Craig who will be 31 on Monday. I don’t see Craig enough, and he’s a great husband to my wonderful sister Sarah and my niece Olivia and nephew Sevrin.

  16. A Course in Miracles
  17. cursing with the shift key (see Bottom 10, #3)

  19. My cats. They amuse me.
  20. climbing roses

bottom 10

  1. mendacity
  2. Me in the morning + chatty Morning People = disaster. I can handle almost anything you throw at me in the afternoon, but it’s best not to even speak to me before 10 AM, let alone try to engage me in a conversation–meaningful or not.
  3. #%?! mosquitos
  4. hypocrisy
  5. Waiting for my nails to dry. I have a hard time sitting still that long.
  6. boredom
  7. The finale of The Bachelorette. I just didn’t see her with him.
