Archive for October, 2010

Hello, I’m back! Last week I had to choose between meeting my own, self-imposed deadline for my blog post or my boss’s deadline for finishing a big project–so I chose work. You all had to wait another week for the Top 20/Bottom 10, but I’ll do next week’s early (since we’re leaving on a cruise Sunday) so we’ll be totally even.

I was also depressed last week about not winning an Emmy Award and didn’t feel inspired to blog about it. There are few things more demoralizing than getting all dressed up (Jamey even rented a tux) and sitting through a VERY long awards ceremony, only to text all of your anxiously awaiting friends and family that you didn’t win, after all. But it was an honor to be nominated, and we had a lovely time in Dallas despite it all. And I get to put “Emmy Nominated Writer” on my resume, so that’s a good thing.

Other exciting news: we have baby kittens in our backyard. They’re very, very cute. All of the neighborhood kids have realized that they’re there, so every day after school gets out my doorbell rings and a parade of small children traipses through my house to the backyard for a kitten hunt. The mama cat has been really nice about letting us hold them, so hopefully we’ll be able to find them some good homes. In the meantime, cuteness abounds at the Osborne household.

But enough about us. On to the lists. I hope you enjoy them, and that you have a fantastic week!

PS If you’re wondering why I’m not doing the photo montage, there are a couple of reasons. The first is that I run out of time every week. The second is that I haven’t been able to sit down and learn the wordpress idiosyncracies well enough to understand how to do a photo montage properly. Every time I did one it included the two photos I had inserted into the top 20 and bottom 10 and I don’t want that. So until I can sit down and figure out you’ll have to live without. I’m very sorry.

  3. RED, the film. I adore Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman, and spy flicks.

  16. GOOD, an integrated media platform for people who want to do good things.
  17. Public Radio. It’s fund drive time, so be sure to donate to your local station if you listen every day (like I do). I know the drives can be annoying, but as a veteran public radio employee I can tell you it’s a fact that they really DO depend on your support.
  18. Shutterstock
  19. My husband’s radio show and podcast, Audiosyncracy. He puts a great deal of time and effort into it every week, and his audience absolutely loves him–for good reason!
  20. Molly Maids

  4. cellulite
  5. insomnia
  6. wounded pride
  7. Never-ending summer weather. It’s 89 degrees outside. We’re supposed to be well into sweater weather by this time and I’m still wearing my summer dresses.

This week’s lists were written very quickly, so please pardon any typos you might catch in them. Also, no photo montage. I’m out of time. That seems to be a trend with me these days…it’s lucky I even produce a blog!

This week is insanely busy, and it ends with a trip to the Texas Emmy Awards Gala in Dallas–wish us luck! I’ll tell you all about it in the next blog. In the meantime, enjoy this week’s lists and have a fantastic week!

John, then and now. (drawing by Isaac Rodriguez, copyright 2010)
  1. John Joerns (JJ),  the Assistant City Manager at the City of La Porte who retires this week after THIRTY YEARS with the City. I’ve only worked there for a year and a half and I can only imagine what 30 years must have been like. My hat is off to him.

Hello, I’m back. I know you all missed the blog last week, and I actually missed writing it. So here it is, for your reading and surfing pleasure.

Two big things:

First, we leave on our cruise in less than four weeks and I’m SO EXCITED I can’t stand it. It’s the only thing keeping me from coming completely unglued lately.

Second, I was nominated for an Emmy! How cool is that? It’s a Texas Emmy–the Lone Star Chapter–but still very, very cool.  I was nominated along with producer Tim Godwin for the writing and production of a video project we did for the City of La Porte. We get to go to the Lone Star Emmy Awards Gala in Dallas on October 16 to find out if we won. There were 35 submissions in our category, and only three were nominated. So we think we have a decent chance. I’ll keep you all posted.

This week will be very busy–tax seminar, conference, the first concert of the Fall Series, the Gulf Coast Challenge Disc Golf Tournament…so I’m going to get right to the list before I get too swamped to post it. Enjoy!

top 20

  1. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta that started this weekend. My friends and family are all posting pictures on Facebook and it reminds me of how totally awesome it is. (see bottom 10, item #6)
  2. being nominated for an Emmy award
  3. The ASES Houston Solar Tour. Jamey and I went on Saturday and learned so much about how to use solar energy in the house and beyond. Way cool.
  4. Fall, finally.
  5. The WD Passport. It’s a tiny, red little box that automatically backs up my computer every 10 minutes. That’s good because otherwise it would never be backed up.
  6. the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
  7. The new case I just got for my iPad. I think. The jury is still technically out on it, but it looks promising.
  8. sailboats on the bay
  9. Lettuce Wraps at Pei Wei
  10. Jamey, who is a genius at all things technological, and who set up a spectacular home entertainment system in our living room.
  11. catnip
  12. coming home after a long, frustrating, discouraging day and knowing that, at least when it comes to the things that matter, life is really really good.
  13. geothermal
  14. James Dyson
  15. The Houston Texans!! Great game against the Raiders.
  16. the return of The Amazing Race
  17. Rahm Emmanuel. Good luck in the Chicago Mayoral Race.
  18. Words with Pirates–the letters are all A, R, H, G or Y
  19. State Fairs
  20. Adam Yanelli and the Bayshore Sun, shutting down after 63 years of service. You’ve done a fantastic job informing and enlightening the City of La Porte, Texas and we will miss you more than you know.

bottom 10

  1. Rick Sanchez
  2. This lingering cough. I’m running out of patience with it.
  3. dirty politics

  5. mass hysteria
  6. not being at the Balloon Fiesta (see top 20, item #1)
  7. only having 24 hours in a day
  8. only having two days in the weekend
  9. uncertainty
  10. My blood pressure. Evidently it’s rather high.
